So, what’s the second thing you do when organising a geek event (after booking the venue)? Setting up a group on every conceivable social networking site of course.

There’s already been a BathCamp Flickr group set up, although you can also simply tag relevant photos with bathcamp08. Now there’s a BathCamp last.fm group too.

last.fm

What’s the point of a last.fm group? Well, partly just for fun, and partly to give us an idea of the aggregated musical tastes of the people coming to BathCamp. We may even play the group radio at the event. So, if you’re a last.fm user, join up.

Once there’s more than 10 members, there should be a group chart showing up below:

Phil Wilson asked a pertinent question about the original (and now) focus for BathCamp. I responded to his comment but thought I’d repeat here.

The original idea for BathCamp came out of a drunken conversation at a conference where a bunch of museum types – me (ex-museum!), Frankie and Mia – expressed an interest in getting some people together.

Since then, I’ve met Laura and Tim and been talking to the wider geektech community in Bath and Bristol. The idea has therefore changed from our original one. You’ll probably see some cultural heritage presentations out of us lot (although I’m considering doing an entirely non-museum session on Ableton Live…) but that’s only because it’s what we do, rather than because it’s what the “focus” of the event is.

In short, it’s a Bar Camp – no agenda, no focus, just a bunch of interested and interesting people getting together.

Tim B and I have been along to the venue and have now booked it. Subject to the usual stuff – earthquakes, venue falling down, total global economic meltdown (imagine… *cough*), we will be hosting the event on Saturday 13th – Sunday 14th September 2008 (24 hours from early Saturday morning to early Sunday morning – yes, we can stay at the venue – bring sleeping bags…) at the Invention Studios in Bath. More links at the end of this post.

It’s a lovely venue, slap in the middle of the city – near to the train and bus stations, pubs, coffee and pasty shops (vital). Upstairs there is a big church hall, downstairs a second room, kitchen, toilets etc.

Very shortly we’ll be putting together an EventWax page to grab attendees – for now if you’re interested in coming along, please fill in the form at http://bathcamp.org if you haven’t already.

Looking forward very much to seeing you there…

It’s all been apparently quiet on the BathCamp scene, but under the hood lots has been going on.

The main thing has been to try and nail a date and venue, without which absolutely nothing else can happen. I’m almost nearly confident (how’s that for bet-hedging) that we’ll be able to announce both a venue and date within the next few days – so, as they say, watch this space for an announcement.

The second thing I’d like to mention is that Tim Beadle has now agreed to help us get this thing off the ground. Laura Francis – who was key in organising last years’ Bristol Barcamp and had been helping me with BathCamp to date has started a course which means she’ll be pretty busy over the summer. She’s still going to be involved (and in our two meetings to date has already proved invaluable..) but taking a bit more of a back seat.

So that’s it for now, and hopefully some news fairly shortly!
